CALAS (Centro Maria Sibylla Merian) is an academic space dedicated to strengthening transdisciplinary and transregional academic cooperation in the Social Sciences and Humanities between Latin America and Germany. With its main headquarters in Mexico, CALAS operates through regional centers in Central America and the Caribbean, the Andes, and the Southern Cone and Brazil. CALAS conducts research on various topics including crisis management, social inequality, and strategic identities in Latin America.

Its laboratories explore interdisciplinary perspectives on crisis, visions of peace, confronting inequalities, and the Anthropocene as a multiple crisis. CALAS also hosts guest researchers and offers individual scholarships and a transatlantic tandem platform for dialogue. The center publishes research findings and organizes events, conferences, and vacancies for interested individuals.

As part of the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences, CALAS is affiliated with the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.
