CALM | Bakersfield CA, also known as the California Living Museum, has been captivating visitors since it first opened its doors to the public in 1983. Its mission is to showcase and interpret the incredible diversity of native California animals and plants for educational, conservation, and research purposes. With a sprawling campus covering 14 park-like acres, CALM provides a haven for over 400 species of non-releasable animals and California native plants. CALM takes pride in its role as an educational hub, annually imparting knowledge to more than 20,000 Kern County students through engaging on-site programs. Moreover, CALM operates the most extensive wildlife rehabilitation center in the Southern San Joaquin Valley, ensuring that injured animals receive the care they need. Visitors to CALM can explore a wide range of exhibits, including an open black bear exhibit, bird of prey exhibit with hawks, owls, and eagles, a waterfowl pond and shorebird exhibit, and an indoor reptile house. Additionally, they can enjoy a children's petting zoo and two rare California Condors. CALM also offers unique experiences like the Central California Children's Railroad and the exciting Condor Challenge, a ropes course and climbing tower designed for team building and leadership training. Fully accredited by the Zoological Association of America, CALM serves as a vital collaborator with Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos, proudly displaying approximately 10% of the country's endangered desert bighorn sheep and the award-winning Cats of California exhibit, featuring bobcats and mountain lions. Recently, CALM unveiled the immersive California Coast Room, where visitors can catch a glimpse of fascinating California native sea creatures. CALM | Bakersfield CA is more than just a zoo; it's a captivating educational experience that celebrates and champions the natural wonders of California.
