## Description

CANHICAP is an association dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in building autonomy and a rewarding relationship with a dog. Since 1986, it has focused on integrating dogs into family life and understanding human-dog interactions. In 1999, a meeting with a blind person led the association to develop training for guide and assistance dogs.

CANHICAP’s approach places the person with a disability at the center of the process. The association works with individuals and, where appropriate, their families to assess their goals and commitment, then provides personalized guidance. Participants help choose their puppy and shape the training around their needs, personality, and lifestyle. Training generally takes about two years, covering socialization, everyday environments, and assistance skills. CANHICAP’s behavior specialists coach participants and provide practical advice and support, with sessions held in the person’s own surroundings. Follow-up may continue after training if desired.

The association also runs puppy classes, where owners and dogs learn together in varied settings, and offers advice to help people develop healthy communication and a positive relationship with their dog, whether or not assistance training is the goal.
