## Description

Captive Money Lab is a pioneering research lab dedicated to advancing the understanding of the political economy of punishment and its implications for social inequality in the United States. Focusing on the controversial "pay-to-stay" fees, the lab investigates how states and local governments impose charges on individuals for their incarceration costs, which can lead to substantial financial burdens. This research highlights how such practices disproportionately affect incarcerated individuals and their families.

With an aim to elevate public awareness, Captive Money Lab not only documents the realities surrounding pay-to-stay laws but also advocates for reforms to abolish these statutes. The lab's team comprises a collective of scholars from leading universities, who work collaboratively to uncover the mechanisms of state revenue extraction from vulnerable communities. Their work is supported by prominent foundations and aims to foster a deeper understanding of the intersection between incarceration costs and socioeconomic disparities, ultimately advocating for a more equitable system.
