## Description

Car Free Day Long Island is an annual initiative celebrated on September 22, designed to encourage residents to opt for alternative transportation methods instead of driving. Launched in 2013 by Transit Solutions and 511 NYRideshare, this event aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality throughout the region. Each year, thousands of Long Islanders pledge to participate, significantly impacting local emissions and promoting sustainable commuting choices.

In 2024, an impressive 3,916 participants pledged to go car free or car-lite, collectively avoiding 59,536 miles of driving and reducing CO2 emissions by 78 tons. The program showcases various commuting options, including public transit, biking, walking, and carpooling, while offering prizes and recognition for participants.

Car Free Day Long Island not only fosters community engagement but also provides essential resources and toolkits for participants and employers to spread awareness. Join the movement and contribute to a cleaner, greener Long Island while enjoying the benefits of a more sustainable lifestyle!
