About
Description
CASA of Philadelphia is a brand that trains and supports community volunteers to advocate for the well-being of children in foster care. Their mission is to provide these vulnerable children with a voice in court, ensuring that their best interests are represented. CASA was first conceived in 1977 by a judge named David Soukup in Seattle.
Since then, CASA has grown into a network of 950 local programs across 49 states in the country. These programs consist of rigorously screened and extensively trained volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteers undergo 30+ hours of training before they are assigned a child and receive 12 hours of continued education annually.
They also have access to ongoing support from staff social workers. CASA volunteers are appointed to children from birth to 18 years old and can advocate for them until they reach the age of 21. Their presence in a child's life greatly reduces the likelihood of long-term foster care or re-entry into the system.
In Philadelphia, CASA was founded in 2006 and has since grown into a professional staff of 10, training and supervising over 100 volunteers annually, serving more than 300 children.
