About Cave Rescue

Description

The British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC) is the representative body for volunteer underground rescue organizations in the British Isles. Established in 1967, its primary role is to support and represent its members at both national and international levels. BCRC promotes the exchange of information between member rescue organizations and acts as a common voice for them.

However, it is important to note that BCRC is a coordinating body and not a governing one. The responsibility for inland rescue lies with the police, but they often rely on the expertise and resources of the sixteen volunteer underground rescue organizations that make up the BCRC. These organizations have over 1,000 highly trained volunteer rescuers, along with specialized equipment and extensive knowledge of their respective geographic areas.

The rescuers themselves are experienced cavers who have undergone additional training in underground rescue techniques. Whether it's in limestone areas, disused mines, or other underground features throughout the United Kingdom, BCRC and its member organizations are dedicated to saving lives and providing expert assistance in challenging underground environments
