About
Description
The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) is a prominent organization that aims to empower working people in Southeastern PA and Greater Philadelphia. Since its inception, CBTU has been dedicated to protecting and empowering black communities through agitation, collective action, and faith. This organization is not a black separatist or civil rights group, but rather an independent voice within the trade union movement.
CBTU challenges organized labor to address the specific needs and aspirations of black and poor workers. CBTU is recognized as a powerful economic and political force within the African American community. Membership to this organization offers numerous benefits, as one in every five black workers is part of a union, earning 40% more than non-union workers.
Politically, CBTU mobilizes black voters to influence elections and public policy at all levels of government, utilizing the vast resources of unions. Additionally, CBTU plays a crucial role on the international stage, advocating against disparities in wealth, power, and living standards, particularly in African and Caribbean countries. They were also the first American labor organization to actively oppose white minority rule in South Africa, and have consistently fought against human rights violations.
CBTU's stature has grown significantly since its founding in 1972, with representation from over fifty different international and national unions. With multiple chapters nationwide and in Ontario, Canada, CBTU maximizes the strength and influence of black workers in unions, championing their communities and fighting for equal rights
