## Description

Vermont Forest Cemetery is the state’s first cemetery dedicated to natural burial, offering a way for people to return their bodies to the ecosystem while supporting the health of the surrounding forest. Located on 56 acres of upland mixed-hardwood forest in central Vermont, the cemetery is dedicated to conservation, community, art, and learning as well as burial. Its natural burial practices allow decomposition to proceed without disrupting the land’s natural character; graves are set among the trees and may be marked with surface markers, then allowed to rewild with understory vegetation. The forest is protected from development in perpetuity through a partnership with the White River Natural Resources Conservation District.

Beyond burial, Vermont Forest Cemetery provides a gathering place for families and community members to honor loved ones and connect with nature. Its activities and plans include educational walks, workshops, research opportunities, outdoor art, and future artist residencies. The cemetery aims to be welcoming and accessible, with a lane designed to help people of differing physical abilities reach gravesites.
