## Description

The Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force, now the IUCN SSC WCPA Important Marine Mammal Areas Specialist Group, works to strengthen the role of marine mammals in protected areas and support their conservation worldwide. Established in 2013, the initiative brings together expertise to encourage collaboration, share information and knowledge, and promote effective spatial solutions and best practices for marine mammal protected areas.

Its central activity is identifying Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs): discrete marine habitats important to marine mammal species that can be delineated and considered for conservation measures. The group coordinates regional expert workshops to identify these areas and makes information available through a searchable database, an interactive e-Atlas, fact sheets, and downloadable spatial layers. Its resources also include IMMA selection criteria, identification-process guidance, handbooks, citations, and materials on applying IMMAs in conservation.

The Specialist Group supports governments, intergovernmental organisations, conservation groups, and the public in considering priority habitats. It also shares news and updates, including information about workshops and new releases of IMMA spatial data.
