About
Description
Welcome to the Charleston Library Society, the South's oldest cultural institution. Since its founding in 1748, we have been strengthening the intellectual and cultural fabric of the Lowcountry. As a private lending library and a comfortable gathering spot, we offer a wide range of products and services to our members.
Explore our extensive collection of books, access digital resources and e-collections through our LibGuide, or immerse yourself in our special collections which include rare manuscripts, historical letters, colonial newspapers, maps, and nautical charts. We also host programs and events on literature, history, world affairs, and music. Join us for upcoming events such as the New Members Mingle, Story Time In The Rabbit Hole, and the Summer Symposium with global expert James Raven.
Additionally, our archives provide a wealth of information about our history and holdings, allowing you to discover the incredible journey our collections have been through over the years. Become a member, donate, or contribute to our Conservation Wish List to make a lasting impact on our Special Collections. Private event rentals are also available for small receptions, ceremonies, and corporate functions.
Visit us at 164 King Street in Charleston, SC, and experience the treasure that is the Charleston Library Society
