Founded in 1940, Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CHELCO) is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative serving over 62,000 accounts across Walton, Okaloosa, Holmes, and Santa Rosa counties in the panhandle of Florida. With a commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity, CHELCO employs over 170 people and maintains over 4,300 miles of line, including those on Eglin Air Force Base. As a distribution cooperative, CHELCO exclusively purchases its energy from PowerSouth Energy Cooperative. The cooperative is democratically controlled by its member-owners, who vote to elect the Board of Trustees representing nine districts throughout the service territory. With a dedication to community empowerment, CHELCO has consistently provided powerful service and has not had a rate increase since 2012. Offering various services and programs such as energy efficiency initiatives, capital credits, member service, and electric vehicle support, CHELCO is committed to serving its members and the local community.
