## Description

Chowan Discovery is the public-facing work of the Chowan Discovery Group, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to researching, documenting, preserving, and presenting the history of the Winton Triangle. Located in northeastern North Carolina’s Roanoke-Chowan area, this landowning community of people of color has a history spanning centuries. The organization shares its story to enrich the region and highlight experiences that may offer insight for today’s increasingly multiracial and multicultural communities.

Chowan Discovery makes its work accessible through exhibits, historical markers, presentations, lectures, interviews, videos, articles, and other writings. Its exhibit, “Building a Mixed Race Community: People, Buildings and Sites of the Winton Triangle,” explores the people and places that shaped the community. The organization also develops and shares resources about local history and civil rights, including marker projects and educational materials. Through these efforts, Chowan Discovery seeks to work with people in and around the Winton Triangle, support the community’s vibrancy, and bring its history to audiences across the Roanoke-Chowan area and beyond.
