CHPM2030 is a groundbreaking project funded by the European Commission that aims to revolutionize geothermal resources development, minerals extraction, and electro-metallurgy. The project's main objective is to develop an innovative technology solution that can address European energy needs while also extracting strategic metals in an integrated process. By converting ultra-deep metallic mineral formations into orebody-Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), CHPM2030 will create a new type of facility called Combined Heat, Power, and Metal Extraction (CHPM).
This facility will co-produce energy and metals, optimizing production based on market demands. The project's workplan focuses on proving the concept by exploring the advantages of orebodies in developing EGS, showcasing that metals can be efficiently leached from these formations, and demonstrating how the continuous leaching of metals enhances system performance over time. Ultimately, CHPM2030 aims to provide a blueprint for a future facility that combines heat, power, and metal extraction from its inception.
This project will significantly contribute to the advancement of geothermal development in Europe, with the goal of implementing pilot projects by 2030 and full-scale commercial operations by 2050
