## Description

Fraunhofer IAP’s Chromogenic Polymers initiative develops customizable materials that change color or transparency in response to external stimuli such as temperature, light, pressure, electrical voltage, ion concentration, or biochemical reactions. The team creates thermoplastics, including films, as well as thermosets, additives, hydrogels, and other material solutions for applications in solar technology, mechanical engineering, automotive technology, and information technology.

Its work spans the value chain, from concept development and colorant research to chromogenic composites, protective technologies, polymer processing, and finished products. Services include consulting and tailored research into active or passive, reversible or irreversible color-changing materials; polymer processing into masterbatches, press plates, and single- or multilayer films; and prototype production using 3D printing, scanning, and CNC machining. The institute also offers micro- and nanoencapsulation, spray drying, material testing, and optical and surface characterization. Its facilities support polymer processing and detailed investigation of material properties, including thermo-optical behavior and interface characteristics. Fraunhofer IAP applies its materials research and technical capabilities to help partners develop and evaluate functional polymer solutions.
