## Description

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is an association that supports nonprofit independent colleges and universities, state-based councils, and higher education affiliates. Established in 1956, CIC aims to enhance public understanding of independent higher education's contributions to society, promote institutional excellence, and provide leadership support for college and university leaders. CIC offers a range of services including conferences, seminars, publications, and programs to help institutions improve educational quality, financial performance, student outcomes, and visibility. Membership in CIC is open to small and mid-sized private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the United States that prioritize the liberal arts, as well as similar institutions outside the US and two-year independent institutions. Independent colleges and universities operate independently of government control and rely on tuition revenue, philanthropic gifts, and grants for support. CIC empowers its members with ideas, resources, and programs to enhance their leadership expertise, educational programs, financial performance, and institutional visibility.
