## Description

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is New Zealand’s national agency for emergency management. It provides information, guidance and resources to help communities, organisations and public agencies prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. Its website offers practical preparedness advice for households, information about emergency events, alerts and warnings, and resources for recovery and previous emergencies. NEMA also supports capability across the emergency management sector through training and development, courses, the takatū learning management system and the CDEM Competency Framework. For coordinated incident response, it publishes the third edition of the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS), New Zealand’s framework for effective coordination among responding agencies. The agency shares plans, strategies, guidelines, legislative information and Emergency Management Rules, and provides resources for elected officials and the lifelines sector. NEMA also publishes news, e-bulletins and other materials, and offers information and contacts for media. The Emergency Management Act 2026 establishes New Zealand’s legal framework for emergency management, replacing the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002.
