The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), formerly known as the American Philological Association, is the premier membership organization in North America dedicated to the study of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Founded in 1869, the SCS aims to advance knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the ancient Greek and Roman world and its enduring value. At its core, the SCS promotes interest and informed discussion in various aspects of classical studies including language, literature, history, material culture, and their relationship to the larger ancient Mediterranean world.

The SCS is committed to advocating for the field as a humanistic endeavor and fostering inclusivity and diversity. Through its divisions, the SCS provides a wide range of services to its members. The Communications and Outreach Division aims to promote a wider public understanding of Classics, while the Education Division focuses on improving classical studies teaching in K-12 and higher education.

The Professional Matters Division ensures adherence to professional ethics, oversees job placements, and addresses diversity issues. The SCS also organizes an Annual Meeting to facilitate scholarly communication and publishes TAPA (Transactions of the American Philological Association) to disseminate current research.
