## Description

Earthquakes can originate from various sources such as fault movements, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and even bomb blasts, releasing sudden bursts of energy within the Earth's crust. While not every fault is associated with active earthquakes, some faults are more prone to seismic activity. When blocks of rock on either side of the fault stick together under pressure, they eventually snap, causing an earthquake. This sudden release of energy creates seismic waves that propagate in all directions. Earthquakes typically occur in the upper layers of the Earth, as deeper rocks deform without snapping. The point in the Earth where the energy is first released is called the focus, while the epicenter is the point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus. Large earthquakes can cause significant destruction, deforming the ground and generating various types of seismic waves, including surface waves that cause most of the damage to human constructions. Primary (P) waves, which move with high velocity, are the first waves recorded by seismographs and can cause significant damage by changing the shape, area, and volume of the ground. Shear (S) waves are the second type of body waves, causing additional ground shaking. Fires and explosions often occur as a result of broken gas pipelines during earthquakes, adding to the damage.
