## Description

Cognome.eu is an international surname research resource that helps visitors explore the origins and geographic distribution of family names. Its database covers more than 1.2 million surnames across over 200 countries, with information available in 16 languages. Users can search for a surname, see where it is common or rare, browse surname lists by country, and consult a global ranking of the 500 most common surnames. A comparison tool lets visitors examine the distribution of two to four surnames around the world, while featured surname pages provide further information about individual names. The site also publishes articles on genealogy and family history, including research into ancestral places of origin, surname changes over time, and genetic ancestry. By bringing country-level surname statistics together with educational content and browsing tools, Cognome.eu supports people curious about their family roots and the spread of their name across borders. The website presents its statistics as updated for 2026 and encourages visitors to use surname patterns as a starting point for exploring possible connections to places and shared ancestry.
