CommunitreeSA is a brand that aims to empower individuals in Cape Town to restore degraded spaces by using locally indigenous vegetation. Cape Town is known as a biodiversity hotspot due to its unique and beautiful plants and animals found within the Cape Floristic Kingdom. However, many areas in the city lack vegetation and are not conducive to supporting life, including humans and other organisms. CommunitreeSA strives to protect and restore the remaining patches of original vegetation in the city by creating functional fynbos corridors. These corridors connect urban areas to nature reserves, allowing insects and animals to feed, breed, and pollinate isolated plants. By greening with locally indigenous plants and shrubs, CommunitreeSA helps to combat the threat of urbanization and promote biodiversity in urban spaces. Their approach involves community-based urban greening, where local community members are trained and guided to restore indigenous vegetation in their own areas. Instead of protecting large areas, CommunitreeSA focuses on creating small patches across the city to restore ecosystem services and expand the original vegetation types found in Cape Town. As a South African non-profit, CommunitreeSA is dedicated to their mission of greening degraded spaces and contributing to socio-ecological restoration.
