## Description

Ara Poutama Aotearoa, the Department of Corrections, is a New Zealand government department focused on public safety and supporting people in the justice system to build better prospects. Its work spans the period before sentencing, community-based sentences and orders, and imprisonment. The department provides programmes intended to reduce reoffending, alongside employment and support services that help people prepare for release and reintegrate into their communities. It also offers a recruitment service connecting employers with jobseekers who are serving a sentence.

Corrections provides practical information and services for people in prison and their whānau, including guidance on visits, depositing money, email and video calls, and finding someone in prison. It supports victims through information, a victim notification register, non-contact orders in the community, and parole information. The department also works with volunteers, employers and community organisations. Its website shares news, locations, brochures, research, statistics, newsletters and strategic reports, and provides channels for media enquiries, complaints and Official Information Act requests.
