Civil Rights Defenders is a politically and religiously independent human rights organization that envisions a world of democratic societies where civil and political rights are enjoyed by all. They partner with and support human rights defenders who work in some of the most repressive regions across four continents. With headquarters in Stockholm and eight regional branch offices worldwide, Civil Rights Defenders has a team of approximately 100 staff members operating in over 50 countries.
Established in 1982 as the Swedish Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, the organization was renamed Civil Rights Defenders in 2009. Their work is funded by governmental organizations, the Swedish Postcode Lottery, foundations, corporate partnerships, and individual private donors. As a registered Swedish nonprofit organization, Civil Rights Defenders is religiously and politically unaffiliated and operates under the oversight of Swedish Fundraising Control.
