About Official Cricket PNG

Description

Cricket PNG, the governing body of cricket in Papua New Guinea (PNG), has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s when the game was introduced by missionaries from the London Missionaries Society. The first cricket matches in PNG were not always played with strict rules, with teams often fielding over fifty players. Over time, the game gained popularity among the coastal villages and became a favorite pastime.

In 1973, PNG became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and has since competed in numerous ICC sanctioned and Pacific Games competitions. Under the leadership of the Barramundi's Captain George Wolstenhome, the Men's team made their mark in 1976, while the Women's team, led by Captain Kune Amini, started their journey in 2006. Today, Cricket PNG has three national teams - the Barramundis, the Lewas, and the Garamuts - each competing at different levels.

The Barramundis are currently ranked 15th in the world in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Cricket PNG also focuses on grassroots development programs, including the highly successful BSP Schools Kriket Programme, which has reached over 171,000 students across the country. The aim of the program is to make cricket accessible to all, including people with disabilities, women, and players from diverse cultural backgrounds.

With a passionate and growing cricket community, PNG continues to make strides in the sport on a global scale
