## Description

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) is an interdisciplinary research centre within the Institute for Technology and Humanity at the University of Cambridge. It studies existential and global catastrophic risks and works to support their mitigation. Bringing together academics, technologists and policy-makers, CSER fosters a worldwide community focused on understanding shared challenges and developing informed responses.

The centre’s work combines research, policy engagement and community-building to advance the study of risks that could have far-reaching consequences. Its research themes span subjects reflected in its publications and public discussion, including artificial intelligence, ethics, pandemics, nuclear deterrence and the vulnerability of the petroleum sector to volcanic hazards. CSER also shares its work through news, media coverage and events, creating opportunities for people across disciplines to connect and collaborate.

For students, the centre offers a PhD in Global Risk and Resilience and an MPhil in Global Risk and Resilience. Through its research, education and engagement, CSER contributes to establishing and developing the field of existential risk studies.
