The brand, Geology of the Salar de Antofalla, is a special research center composed of the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Technische Universitaet Berlin, GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, and Universitaet Potsdam. It focuses on studying the sedimentation, tectonics, and volcanism in the Salar de Antofalla area located in the southern part of the Central Andean Puna plateau in NW Argentina. The main goal of this research center is to investigate the interaction between tectonism, volcanism, and sedimentation/erosion in the Mesozoic to recent intra-andean basin.

Through various investigations, such as stratigraphic subdivision, facies analysis, petrography, geochemistry, and documentation of the structural inventory, they have discovered the incorporation of the sedimentary basins into the Andean orogen since 40 Ma. Their findings have also revealed variations in magmatism related to changing tectonic conditions in the Southern Puna since the Oligocene/Miocene. This research provides valuable insights into the development of the Andean magmatic arc and the geological evolution of the area.
