## Description

DeFlock is an open-source project that maps automated license plate readers (ALPRs), also known as license plate readers, across the United States. Its map helps people explore reported camera locations near them and understand how these systems collect and use vehicle data. DeFlock explains that ALPRs can record a vehicle’s location, date and time, along with details such as its make, model, color, and identifying features. The project raises concerns about privacy, data sharing, wrongful arrests, profiling, and other potential misuse, while examining claims about the technology’s effectiveness.

DeFlock provides educational resources about ALPRs, Flock Safety and other camera vendors, as well as information on public records and city council engagement. People can contribute by submitting camera locations, joining local groups, getting involved in advocacy, or supporting the project through donations and its store. The site also shares official social media channels and links to its GitHub project. DeFlock’s work is focused on making the spread of license plate readers more visible and helping communities understand and respond to their use.
