## Description

DeFlock Monterey is an independent initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the extensive automated license plate reader (ALPR) surveillance present in Monterey County. With over 316 ALPR cameras operated by various local agencies, including the Salinas Police Department and the Seaside Police Department, this initiative provides a live map detailing the specific locations and operators of these surveillance devices. By documenting where these licenses plates are being tracked, DeFlock Monterey aims to promote transparency and engage the community in efforts to roll back the deployment of such surveillance tools. Their activities are grounded in public engagement, relying on records requests and public comment at city councils to demand accountability regarding ALPR usage. The group strongly advocates for residents to sign petitions, map additional cameras, and ask for clear documentation about ALPR operations and data retention practices. DeFlock Monterey stands against vandalism, focusing instead on peaceful advocacy to secure residents' rights to privacy and consent in surveillance matters.
