About

Description

Detroit Horse Power is a non-profit organization based in Detroit, MI, that aims to address two significant issues facing the city: the lack of opportunities for vulnerable populations, especially children, and the abundance of vacant land. They achieve this by providing a safe and enriching space where program participants can learn valuable skills through riding and caring for horses. By utilizing repurposed vacant land, their facility also contributes to the city's renewal and serves as a center for community events and equestrian services.

Detroit Horse Power's mission is to give under-resourced youth a supportive environment that fosters their future development. Through interactions with horses, children learn critical traits such as perseverance, empathy, responsible risk-taking, confidence, and self-control. Since its inception in 2015, the organization has successfully conducted summer horse camps and after-school programs, benefiting over 500 Detroit youth.

Their programs not only teach kids how to ride and care for horses but also provide exposure to various equine professions through guest speakers. Furthermore, Detroit Horse Power is actively working towards building an urban equestrian center on a 14-acre demolished school site within Detroit's city limits. This future facility will enhance the scale and accessibility of their youth impact program, empowering students and strengthening the surrounding neighborhoods.

By participating in Detroit Horse Power's programs, children gain lifelong lessons that will support their success in both school and life
