## Description

Detroit Kendo Dojo is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching and developing Kendo in the Metro Detroit community and beyond. Founded in 1996 by Yoshiteru Tagawa, the dojo follows his guiding principle of developing correct Kendo through disciplined training. Its community includes more than 60 members, from children to seniors, who practice together and learn the traditional Japanese martial art.

The dojo’s instruction is led by Tagawa-sensei, who holds the rank of Hanshi 8-DAN, the highest rank in Kendo. In recognition of his long-term contribution to Kendo’s development overseas, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, in 2024. Detroit Kendo Dojo holds three practices each week and welcomes prospective members through free trial sessions. It provides information about joining, membership and tuition, as well as guidance for traveling kenshi who wish to participate. The dojo also hosts the annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament in February and shares practice schedules, news, events, and community feedback opportunities.
