Description
DKMS BMST Foundation India is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer and other blood disorders, such as thalassemia and aplastic anemia. Our mission is to improve the situation for patients suffering from these diseases in India and around the world. We achieve this by raising awareness about the importance of blood stem cell transplantation and by registering potential blood stem cell donors.
Our story began with one family's fight to save someone they loved. When Mechtild Harf was diagnosed with leukemia, she needed a bone marrow transplant, but there were only 3,000 potential donors available. Motivated by his wife's difficult situation, Peter Harf, along with Mechtild's transplant physician Gerhard Ehninger, founded DKMS in 1991.
Their goal was to expand the registry to increase the chances of finding matching donors for patients in need. Despite Mechtild's passing, Peter and his daughter Katharina Harf have continued their mission, and DKMS has become the world's largest stem cell donor register. Join us in giving blood cancer patients a second chance at life
