DKRZ, the German Climate Computing Center, is a central national service institution for climate and Earth system research. It provides the highest computing power, advanced data management, and expert services for simulation-based climate science in Germany. DKRZ's high-performance computers, data storage, and services form the core research infrastructure for climate modeling.

In addition to computing power and technical support, DKRZ offers a comprehensive portfolio of tailored services. It maintains and develops user software relevant to climate research, provides advice and support on IT issues, and collaborates on national and international projects to continuously improve climate modeling infrastructure. Established in Hamburg on November 11, 1987, DKRZ is a non-commercial GmbH with four shareholders: the Max Planck Society, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (University of Hamburg), the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, and the Helmholtz Center Hereon.

DKRZ is also funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Helmholtz Association. Its resources, including computing time, storage space, archival capacity, consultation, and visualization, are provided free of charge. Researchers in the field of Earth system research can apply for these resources.

With over 100 employees, mainly with backgrounds in natural and/or computer sciences, DKRZ consists of three scientific departments - Applications, Data Management, and Systems - as well as Administration. Additionally, Prof. Dr.

Thomas Ludwig, the CEO of DKRZ, leads the Scientific Computing department at the University of Hamburg, which is located in the same building and collaborates closely with DKRZ.
