## Description

The Statistical Ecology and Forest Science (SEFS) Lab is a research group at North Carolina State University, led by Jeff Doser in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. It develops statistical models and open-source software to support forest and wildlife management, conservation, and ecological research. The lab’s work includes methods for using National Forest Inventory data to estimate forest characteristics at scales relevant to local management, as well as computational tools that help practitioners access advanced statistical methods and data products. It also develops approaches for analyzing information from autonomous monitoring technologies, including LiDAR, acoustic recording units, camera traps, and other remote sensing systems. Additional research examines species distributions, forest resources, and biodiversity across large geographic areas, accounting for spatial patterns, changing species-environment relationships, and interactions among species. The lab collaborates with researchers worldwide to apply its modeling methods to practical ecological and conservation questions. Its freely available software and code are shared through the lab’s GitHub organization, with projects including tools such as rFIA, spOccupancy, and spAbundance.
