## Description

DUPAN, the Foundation for a Sustainable Eel Sector in the Netherlands, is a collaboration representing most of the Dutch eel sector. Its work focuses on supporting healthy eel populations while helping preserve the Netherlands’ eel culture. The foundation promotes eel releases into nature and supports scientific research, alongside sharing information about eel biology, migration and population figures through its information centre, publications and educational resources.

DUPAN highlights several approaches to eel stewardship, including releasing young eels and helping adult eels pass barriers such as dikes. It also promotes the Eel Stewardship Fund (ESF), which receives contributions from consumers and participating market businesses. Eel products that contribute to the fund can be identified by a blue logo and producer number on the packaging; participating retailers may also display a certificate. DUPAN provides information about sustainable producers, processing and trade, and offers free ESF licences to retailers and hospitality businesses. The foundation also shares sector news and updates on research and sustainability initiatives, and works with partners including the Sustainable Eel Group.
