Description
The Durham Literacy Center is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering the residents of Durham County, North Carolina, who wish to improve their literacy skills. Since 1985, the Durham Literacy Center has been providing free instruction and tutoring to over 18,000 adults and out-of-school youth. They offer various programs, including adult literacy, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), college and career readiness, and youth achievement.
Their mission is to help adults achieve their life goals by offering learner-centered educational opportunities. The Durham Literacy Center also prepares out-of-school youth and adult learners for high school equivalency tests like the GED® and HiSet®, provides English classes for immigrant adults, and offers high school equivalency and life skills classes for incarcerated youth. They rely on the support of dedicated volunteers, who are trained and supported to help students achieve their educational goals.
Partnering with Durham Technical Community College, the Durham County Library, and other organizations, the Durham Literacy Center strives to provide high-quality programming and make a positive impact on the community.
