## Description

The Eckenstein family website documents the history, genealogy and business legacy of a family associated with Basel since the sixteenth century. It traces the family’s roots to Georg Eckenstein, who became a citizen of Basel in 1565, and follows the descendants of Georg and his brother Martin across generations. The site highlights family members’ roles in civic and military life, public service, religious work, farming and architecture, alongside the family’s long tradition in trade.

It also recounts the development of Eckenstein businesses. In 1801, Johann Caspar Eckenstein and a partner established a malt business, later expanded by his son Eduard into the Eckenstein malt factory. Eduard’s twin brother, Adolf-Wilhelm, founded the Cardinal brewery. The Pianohaus Eckenstein, established in Basel in 1861, became part of Musik Hug in 2017. Visitors can explore family history, portraits and memorials, the family tree, and accounts of the malt and brewing enterprises. The website also discusses known descendants in Switzerland, the United States and Britain, and the history of the place name Eckenstein.
