## Description

The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) is Ethiopia’s federal regulatory body responsible for protecting public health through the oversight of food and health-related products. Established as an autonomous government body under Proclamation No. 1263/2021, with its powers and duties further defined by Regulation No. 531/2023, EFDA operates under the Ministry of Health.

The Authority regulates food, medicines, medical devices, cosmetics, blood and blood products, traditional and alternative medicines, tobacco, alcohol, and other products and services within its mandate. Its work includes product registration and licensing, safety and quality testing, inspection and enforcement, medicine evaluation and market authorization, and pharmacovigilance. EFDA also oversees clinical trials and supports the tracking and tracing of pharmaceutical products.

To help businesses and the public access regulatory services, EFDA provides online systems for import permits, medicine registration, and certificates of competency for relevant businesses. Its website also offers regulations, directives, guidelines, drug lists, safety alerts, public product information, and other resources.
