## Description

Elina Mäkinen, known online as Elinamae, is a Finnish ice swimmer, TikTok creator and storyteller who shares experiences of swimming and exploring in extreme cold. Her background includes competitive pool swimming as a teenager, followed by open-water training, channel swimming and long-distance ice swimming. She took part in the 1-kilometre ice swimming world championships in 2015 and completed her first ice mile in 2017. In 2022, she completed a 1.6-kilometre ice mile in Svalbard water at -0.8°C, described on her site as the women’s record for the coldest ice mile.

Mäkinen’s work combines personal stories, social media content and documentary participation. COLD, a science documentary produced by Yle and Arte France, is available to watch. The project explores cold exposure, including her participation in hypothermia tests at Oulu Health Institute and brown-fat X-ray research at Turku University Hospital. Through her content, she aims to encourage people to step beyond their comfort zones and find inner energy. She also emphasizes safety, recovery and understanding after-drop when undertaking extreme cold activities.
