## Description

Encointer is a community-focused initiative that helps people create autonomous local currencies to stimulate economic activity. Its free, easy-to-use technology is designed for communities where residents have skills and products to offer but limited purchasing power. Community currencies are distributed unconditionally at regular intervals to active participants, helping increase the local money supply and keep value circulating. Their value is shaped by local supply and demand, and a monthly demurrage mechanism encourages people to spend rather than accumulate currency.

Encointer’s protocol uses in-person key-signing meetups to establish a community web of trust. Participants meet at regular intervals, with randomly selected people gathering at locations across the community to demonstrate that they are unique individuals. This approach aims to prevent duplicate claims without requiring state-issued identification, making participation accessible to people with a smartphone. Encointer invites individuals to join or form communities and offers an app, partnership opportunities, and resources for Web3 communities.
