## Description

Valio, a renowned dairy company, is making a significant investment in eniferBio, a company specializing in converting agricultural, forestry, and food industry side streams into PEKILO® mycoprotein. This high-protein ingredient caters to both the global food and animal nutrition markets. The funding will facilitate eniferBio in scaling up the production of sustainable PEKILO® mycoprotein powder. This venture has attracted the participation of Aqua-Sparks, a Dutch company, as well as Finnish entities Tesi, Voima Ventures, and Nordic Foodtech VC in eniferBio's Series A round of financing.

Valio understands the increasing demand for protein as the global population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. To ensure food production aligns with sustainability goals, innovative solutions like cellular agriculture are necessary. eniferBio excels in this area and has developed groundbreaking methods to utilize side streams from the food industry to produce protein. Valio is thrilled to be an active participant in developing alternative means of food production.

PEKILO® mycoprotein is an excellent Finnish innovation and the world's first mycoprotein product. It can serve as a feed and food-grade ingredient due to its nutritional value. With up to 70% protein content, 20-30% fiber, 10% unsaturated fats and minerals, and abundant vitamin B, PEKILO® stands on par with traditional animal-based proteins, soy, and pea proteins. Moreover, its production process is highly efficient, consuming minimal energy, water, and land, while avoiding water body eutrophication.

Valio has been engaged in exploring cellular agriculture opportunities since 2021 and joined forces with eniferBio in 2022 for research on PEKILO® protein. Initially, eniferBio concentrated on developing PEKILO® mycoprotein powder for food industry and animal nutrition applications. The next phase involves collaborating to create products utilizing PEKILO® protein.

With this investment, Valio and other investors provide crucial support in commercializing alternative protein production. They bring invaluable information, expertise, and industry connections, enhancing eniferBio's progress. EniferBio's CEO and Co-founder, Simo Ellilä, expresses gratitude for the support and emphasizes the transformation of waste into a high-value ingredient through their process. Having tested their production process extensively for over 15 years, eniferBio is fully prepared to scale up production and explore diverse product applications.

Valio's commitment to sustainable solutions is evident in its engagement with eniferBio and dedication to finding new means of meeting the growing global protein demand. Through this collaboration, they aim to contribute to a circular economy and address the challenges of future food production.
