Africa Earth Observation Challenge is an annual open innovation challenge dedicated to advancing Africa's geospatial readiness. Since 2016, the challenge has been sourcing novel space technologies with the aim of driving entrepreneurial activity in the African space industry and raising awareness about the value of earth observation data across the continent. By utilizing remote-sensing technologies, earth observation gathers information about the planet's physical, chemical, and biological systems, enabling monitoring of changes in natural and artificial environments. This challenge is crucial as it supports the African Union's goal of leveraging earth observation as a critical resource in achieving Africa's development goals. Through a multi-step process that includes searching for innovators, providing entrepreneur support and ongoing empowerment, the challenge identifies promising entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses across Africa and helps develop them into sustainable companies. Winners are awarded prizes such as financial support, incubation and mentorship, cloud services, technical support, data packages, intellectual property services, technology subscriptions, and media publicity.
