# Ethereal

- **Primary alias:** `ethereal.email`

## Description

Ethereal is a free fake SMTP service that gives developers a safe place to test email without sending messages to real recipients. Designed primarily for Nodemailer and EmailEngine users, it also supports other development workflows that need a disposable email sandbox. Users can create throwaway SMTP test accounts instantly, without signing up or verifying an email address, either through Nodemailer’s API or the Ethereal website.

To test an application, developers send messages through Ethereal as they would through an SMTP provider. Ethereal captures every message rather than delivering it, so real inboxes are not contacted or spammed. Users can inspect messages in the web interface or open a preview URL generated by Nodemailer. Ethereal accounts also support IMAP and POP3 access, allowing messages to be read with compatible email clients. Public accounts do not accept inbound external email; that feature is available for accounts created by EmailEngine subscribers. If credentials are lost, users can simply create a new test account.
