Ethiopian Education and Research Network (EthERNet) is a groundbreaking initiative established in 2001 as part of a national capacity-building program. Aimed at providing highly interconnected and high-performance networks for universities and educational institutions in Ethiopia, EthERNet offers a range of services such as Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Infrastructure as a Service. With a current network bandwidth of 1Gbs/sec or better, EthERNet connects numerous universities across Ethiopia and is embarking on a project to provide 10GBit/sec to each public university.

This next-generation network is designed to minimize single points of failure and accommodate dynamic growth in bandwidth demand. Owned by the Ministry of Education, EthERNet collaborates closely with the ICT Center of Excellence to engage stakeholders and deliver advanced networking solutions for research and education institutions in Ethiopia, enabling active participation in global educational communities.
