## Description

The European Energy Award (eea) is a European programme supporting local governments in developing and delivering effective energy and climate policies. Established in 1988 and continually shaped by municipalities and local experts, it helps communities use energy more efficiently and expand renewable energy. Nearly 2,000 local authorities, representing around 74 million people, participate across several European countries.

The programme provides a structured process, methodology and measures to help local governments assess their current work, identify priorities and create tailored, long-term action plans. Accredited experts assist with annual evaluation and adjustment, while an international benchmarking system helps municipalities compare progress in light of their individual responsibilities. The eea also connects local initiatives with national and European strategies and encourages cooperation through projects and partnerships, including work with the EU Covenant of Mayors and Smart Cities initiatives.

Its award and certification system recognises municipal achievements, with the eea Gold distinction highlighting exemplary energy policies.
