## Description

Explain Labs develops open, model-driven educational tools for neonatal care, created by Tim Antonius, a neonatologist in the Netherlands. Its core product, Explain, is a browser-based physiological simulation engine that models cardiac and respiratory systems and calculates pressures, flows, volumes, and blood gases in real time. Learners can adjust variables such as resistance, ductal patency, and ventilator settings to explore how a patient’s physiology responds. The simulator includes 35 scenarios, covering healthy and premature newborns, fetal and adult models, and a range of congenital heart conditions. Users can also load or build patients and explore ventilator and ECLS support.

Explain Labs offers Explain Patient Monitor, an emulator that uses the same engine to display ECG, plethysmograms, arterial pressure, respiration, and capnography for manikin-based simulation training. Its third offering, CRADLE, is an AI companion for neonatal clinical reasoning and data-driven learning, with cohort data analysis available by invitation.

The engine and web application are publicly available under the MIT licence, with readable model definitions and a citable Zenodo archive.
