## Description

External Reference is an architecture and design studio based in Barcelona and Dubai, working across luxury hospitality, retail, residential and exhibition design. The studio turns ideas into spatial experiences, creating multidisciplinary environments that shape how people encounter places and brands. Its work explores the boundaries of architecture and design, with projects ranging from hotel spaces and experiential retail to residential settings and exhibitions. External Reference also develops objects, including VAS, a pair of vessels designed by founder Carmelo Zappulla that explores contrasts in materials, textures and processes. Alongside its design practice, the studio’s External Research Lab investigates tools and approaches connected to artificial intelligence, spatial analysis and neuroarchitecture, with an interest in how people perceive space. The studio highlights innovation, technology, materials and the relationship between design and nature in its work. Its projects and ideas have received recognition, including awards for Onada Terrace Suites at W Barcelona and the VAS vessels.
