Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA) is a multi-stakeholder action platform that aims to create a fair and sustainable cobalt supply chain. As the demand for cobalt continues to grow, FCA focuses on professionalizing artisanal mine sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) while safeguarding children's rights, promoting economic diversification, and monitoring impact. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in the DRC provides employment opportunities for communities, but it is also associated with hazardous conditions, child labor, and unfair trading practices. FCA works with local cooperatives, civil society, and mine site operators to ensure responsible mining practices and establish effective controls to mitigate child labor. The goal is to create safer working conditions, minimize environmental impact, and provide access to education and job opportunities for local youth. Additionally, FCA addresses the root causes of high risks in artisanal mining by promoting economic diversification and sustainable livelihoods for community members. By driving the supply of fair cobalt, the alliance supports the professionalization of ASM site management and channels financial investment into mine improvements.
