About
Description
Falls City Beer has a unique and captivating history that sets it apart from other breweries. Founded in 1905 by Ben Schrader and a group of local tavern owners and grocers, Falls City was established to combat the encroachment of large beer conglomerates on the Louisville beer scene. It quickly gained popularity and became one of the most beloved breweries in the city.
During the Prohibition era, while many other breweries were forced to close their doors, Falls City adapted and managed to remain open by selling near beer, soda, and ice. In 1933, they resumed brewing and continued to thrive throughout the '40s and '50s, becoming a dominant regional brewery. However, the rise of big beer in the '60s and '70s led to a decline in sales for Falls City.
Despite various marketing efforts, including the ill-fated Billy Beer, the brewery ultimately closed its doors in 1978. In the late 2000s, as Louisville's craft beer scene experienced a resurgence, the Falls City brand made a triumphant comeback. With a renewed commitment to quality craft beer and the city's rich history, Falls City Beer proudly holds its place as a premier Louisville brewery.
