Family Empowerment Media (FEM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling informed contraceptive decisions through clear and accurate communication. FEM believes that providing couples with access to modern contraceptives is a cost-effective way to prevent maternal deaths and improve lives. Through evidence-driven campaigns, FEM empowers women and men to realize their contraceptive intentions, supported by radio-based social and behavioral change initiatives. Since its establishment in September 2020, FEM has successfully implemented multiple campaigns in Nigeria, reaching an audience base of 5.6 million listeners. They have conducted extensive listener research, gathering valuable insights from over 2,650 listeners. FEM aims to continue making a significant impact by conducting short campaigns in expansion locations and validating their impact through a Randomized Controlled Trial. With locally adapted content and targeted radio advertisements, FEM aims to educate families about reproductive opportunities and connect women with contraception resources. By 2027, FEM aims to reach 25 million listeners and improve maternal health, increase subjective well-being, and enhance opportunities for children to attend school. FEM's approach is evidence-based, culturally sensitive, lean, experimental, and transparent, ensuring optimal impact for women to realize their reproductive goals. FEM's work has been recognized with awards such as the d-prize and Grand Challenges Canada's Stars in Global Health Award, acknowledging their cost-effective, innovative, and evidence-based approach.
