## Description

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana is a public body established in 1997 to safeguard public health and safety. Under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), it sets and enforces standards for the manufacture, import, export, sale and distribution of regulated products. Its remit covers food; medicines, including herbal, allopathic and veterinary drugs; cosmetics; medical devices; household chemical substances; tobacco products; blood and blood products; and clinical trials.

The FDA provides services including product registration, facility licensing, product-advertising oversight, clinical-trial authorisation, import and export controls, laboratory services and market surveillance. It also publishes product information, guidelines, alerts and public education resources, and accepts complaints about products and safety concerns.

Alongside its regulatory work, the Authority runs initiatives to support small-scale food processors, encourage safe disposal of unwanted medicines, prevent youth drug use and promote Ghanaian products. Its annual blood donation exercise supports the national blood bank. Through these services and programmes, the FDA works to strengthen compliance and protect consumers across Ghana.
